As the most accessible and versatile tool we have for directly influencing our nervous system, each inhale offers a path to mastering the tensions we face internally and externally. Each exhale is the gateway to greater health, resilience, and inner peace amidst life’s challenges, as we release the resistance we have to the creation that is seeking to emerge through us.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Body’s Communication Superhighway

At the heart of this breath-body connection is the vagus nerve, often called the “wandering nerve” due to its extensive reach throughout the body. This cranial nerve serves as a primary component of the parasympathetic nervous system, our “rest and digest” mode. The Expanding Sphere Breath Exercise

  1. Begin by sitting comfortably, eyes closed if you wish. Become aware of your inner universe—notice any nebulae of tension or black holes of stress without trying to change them. Simply recognize their beauty and right to be.
  2. Focus on your natural breath, the gentle cosmic wind flowing in and out. Observe where this wind reaches and where it seems stagnant.
  3. Envision a small sphere of light in the center of your chest—a nascent star at the core of your being.
  4. As you inhale, let this star expand, growing into a luminous galaxy. Feel its gentle pressure pushing outward, like the force of cosmic inflation in the early universe.
  5. As you exhale, maintain this expansion. Don’t let your inner universe contract.
  6. With each subsequent breath, consciously expand your sphere further. Let it press against the boundaries of your physical form, challenging the gravitational pull of old tensions.
  7. As you continue this rhythmic expansion, imagine this new pressure dissolving the rigid structures of stress in your body. Like a supernova’s blast reshapes cosmic dust into new formations, each breath reveals your supernatural gift to reimagine the moment and create worlds anew.
